MENS

Although both Sunday games for the 1st and 2nd XI were abandoned, we still played some cricket on Saturday - and once again, the rain didn't stop the Mercantile on Sunday for our 3rd XI!

Men's 1st XI vs. Richmond City

Canterbury 164 (39.5)

Richmond City 164 (39.4)

L Streat 37 (56)

O Lowe 4/39 (5.4)

L Ross 32 (37)

H Cran 3/27 (8)

Round 5 in Wright Shield delivered one of the most dramatic results you’ll see in local cricket.

Canterbury batted first and worked hard all afternoon on a surface that never really allowed free scoring. Our skipper Lachlan Streat was the standout, crafting a composed 37 and anchoring the top order during a tricky early period. William Stamper provided the stability alongside him, grinding out 26 from 59 in a valuable opening effort.

In the middle overs, Lachie Ross shifted the tempo, bringing out the broom for some powerful sweep shots, finishing with a brisk 32 off 37. However, with consistent wickets falling, Canterbury eventually closed at 164 from 39.5 overs - a score the team felt was under par but still gave us a chance.

Richmond City’s reply mirrored Canterbury’s in almost every way: partnerships threatened but never fully flourished, the pressure built steadily, and the game tightened right down to its final moments. Whilst the other bowlers kept things tight, Hugh Cran (3/27) and Ollie Lowe (4/39 (5.4) proved our strike weapons, picking up important wickets throughout the middle and late overs.

It came down to the last over - 7 runs to win, 1 wicket in hand. Ollie Lowe bowling to Clayton Hawley... and the first ball goes straight back over Ollie's head for 6! The game is now tied. Two good balls followed, no runs scored. And then the perfect yorker... OUT LBW. A tied match!

Men's 2nd XI vs. St. Kevins Old Boys

Canterbury 8/140 (40)

St. Kevins 9/154 (40)

T Newman 29 (41)

S Townsend 3/28 (8)

M Howard 21 (59)

C Whiting 1/35 (8)

Despite falling short of the St Kevin's total, the 2s are building more and more momentum every week. There was no one to fault with the bowling. Standouts were Eddie Newman (2/19 off 5.0) late in the attack and Sam Townsend, in classic Sam Townsend fashion, parachuting in to take 3fa late in the innings to finish with 3/28 off his 8.

With the bat, Tom Newman looked very comfortable for his 29 (41) until he unfortunately hit one to deep backward square. Max Howard, up the order at no. 3, surprised many with his 21 (59), seeing out seven overs of St Kevin's most damaging left-arm quick. The middle order made many starts but sadly couldn’t go on with them, leaving too much work for Subash Joshi and Captain Tony Smith’s partnership at the end of the innings.

Something is building in the 2s - definitely a side to watch over the coming month before the break.

Men's 3rd XI vs. Burnley CYMS 2

Canterbury 9/101 (28.4)

Burnley CYMS 2 10/98 (27.2)

E Newman 21

D Newman 4/11 (7)

K Ferguson 14

J Thompson 2/13 (4)

THE GAME THAT WASN'T MEANT TO BE

In not only another rain-delayed 66-over match but also due to a wet patch at one end of the wicket, both sides bowled from one end!

In what was a day for the bowlers, our batting struggled on the tricky wicket for a total of 9/102. Yet Eddie Newman once again stood out with his crucial 21 off 47. Great work, Eddie!

Then it was up to our bowlers, in which the Newman name pops up again! This time Captain and father of Eddie, Damien, led the Berries’ attack with the very tidy figures of 4/17 off 7. The rest of the attack were very tidy, keeping Burnley to a run rate of just over 3 an over.

But it was 3s debutant Reece Middleton, a young leggie, who took the final wicket with a very deceiving wrong’un to win the game for the team and bring up Canterbury's first senior men's win for the season!

WOMENS

Women's 1st XI vs. Norwood

Game abandoned.

Women's 2nd XI vs. Belgrave

Canterbury 105 (33.1)

Belgrave 2/209 (36)

M Hay 48 (66)

A Aiyer 1/37 (7)

I Davison 25 (31)

S Vlahos 1/27 (5)

The Women’s 2nd XI put up a solid effort on Sunday away against a Belgrave side. With the bat, Melissa Hay had an awesome run, leading the innings with her 48 runs as well as backing it up with a catch in the field. Imogen Davison also had some amazing batting, adding a valuable 25, helping push the total to 105.

Despite the tough total to defend by Belgrave, the bowling was led well by Annika and Sophie, who both picked up wickets and kept the pressure on as much as possible. Despite Belgrave’s batting lineup and total, the team’s fielding intensity stayed high throughout the innings.

Mia Roberts and Immy Davison were particularly strong in the field, contributing to a solid all-round performance with lots of highlights to take into this next week with hopefully a little less rain.

JUNIOR GIRLS

Stage 3 Girls vs. Richmond Union

Canterbury 0/109 (20)

Richmond Union 4/90 (20)

J van der Knijff 21* (30)

J Udayabhanu 1/6 (3)

G Khaw 18* (30)

Isla Clayton 1/2 (2)

Canterbury continued their strong Anna Lanning Shield campaign with a confident 19-run victory over Richmond Union at Burnley Oval.

Batting first, Canterbury delivered one of their most consistent team displays of the season, with four top-order players retiring after impressive contributions. Isla Clayton, Jagrithi Udayabhanu and Genevieve Khaw each made 18 from 30 balls, while Jessica van der Knijff top-scored with a well-timed 21. Late support from Hanna Lindsay (10*) lifted Canterbury to a competitive 0/109.

In defence,

Canterbury’s bowlers once again showed discipline and depth. Elodie Powyer was excellent with 2 overs for just 6 runs, backed by tight spells from Minnie Carty (3 overs for 11) and Maggie Philip (2 overs for 7). Across the innings, Canterbury maintained control, restricting Richmond Union to 4/90 and preventing any significant partnerships from forming.

The result cements Canterbury’s momentum as they continue to build a well-balanced, confident brand of cricket this season.
