MASTERS CRICKET
Canterbury Cricket Club has been a leader in veterans’ cricket in Victoria for 16 seasons. Starting with an Over-40s side, the club has expanded to five veterans’ teams: two Over-40s in the Eastern Cricket Association, two Over-50s with Veterans Cricket Victoria and, since 2018-19, an Over-60s team also in VCV. More than 70 players were registered in 2019-20.
Canterbury players are regular selections for representative sides, and the club emphasizes participation alongside competition. Captains are committed to giving every player opportunities across the season.
The club prizes the “spirit of cricket”: teammates encourage one another, players walk when they believe they are out, and opponents are congratulated for strong performances. Postmatch hospitality, including afternoon tea, is part of the tradition, and rivals often become friends.
Canterbury’s veterans have also toured England three times, in 2013, 2015 and 2018, playing a dozen matches on historic grounds. For players, the program offers both competitive cricket and lasting friendships.
